Health plan price transparency helps consumers know the cost of a covered item or service before receiving care. This valuable data is now available but is hidden in machine readable files (MRFs) that have been inaccessible for analysis -- until now.

The MRF Explorer is an online look-up app for in-network reimbursement rates, for medical services including physician, hospital, drug, and medical equipment.

The MRF Search is an adjunct to the MRF Explorer to find the MRF URLs for a specified insurance company.

Quick Start Guide

MRF Explorer

The MRF Explorer is a custom-built web application for querying MRFs, providing a quick and affordable solution. Nothing needs to be installed. You need only to use the web browser on your computer or cell phone.

  1. Select among the Sample URL - each accompanied by a tutorial or Enter the URL to an MRF of your choice. Use our MRF Search to find the MRF URLs for a specified insurance company
  2. Specify EIN (optional), NPI (optional but recommended), and Billing codes
  3. Press Process button
The extracted data is provided in the form of a CSV file that can be viewed and analyzed in Excel.

MRF Search

The purpose of MRF Search is to find the MRF URLs for a specified insurance company. MRF Search can be useful as a supplement to MRF Explorer or on its own. You can narrow your search results to specified EINs, NPIs and Billing codes.

  1. Select the insurance company name from the list
  2. Specify EIN (optional), NPI (optional but recommended), and Billing codes
  3. Press Process button
The found URLs are provided in the form of the plain text file. Each line is a path to a specific MRF. Copy and paste the URL text into MRF Explorer for further processing.
